Lately
I’ve been listening To a lot of Silence She’s rich Full bodied And knows The rhymes And rhythms Of suffering Like few others do I’ve been coming to accept That wordlessness Renders pain the best Doesn’t dilute nor contort Never warps nor censors The harrowing layers and textures That make you wonder Where pain ends and you begin As I lay awake last night The magpies sang at midnight Calling through the darkness Like spirits from a faraway land To be with our pain To let the silence hold us To trust that, with time, We will wake to be stirred by birdsong Be moved by first morning’s light And feel the sun shining Brightly on the inside, again.
